THERMAL BATHS PIER 54
New York, USA
New York is the first example when talking about metropolis. Its high density and great skyscrapers make of it a vertical city, especially Manhattan, where business concentration is even larger. The project seeks for horizontality which faces the vertical development. Due to that fact, it is located at one of the Hudson Riverside piers, old docks on a recently redesign with diverse uses. Since it is in a close contact with the water, a very proper function its thermal bath.

Building is developed under the water. It consists on a continuous space that allocates four main pools and resting areas. Several blocks made of striated concrete are laid out configuring the whole space. These blocks contain inside specific wellness rooms, as saunas, aromatherapy spaces or massage. In addition, they penetrate the rooftop, leaving narrow holes where light is filtrated to the interior.
The rooftop becomes free, turning into a walking and resting space, open to the people, and enriching the horizontality of the project. The blocks overhang with different high, composing the square. Couple of them have small functions as access or café. The rooftop is also lightly extended over the river, like whether it is floating.

Functionally, two levels are created: public one, with direct access from the street, and private one, from the boxes. Both are strictly related with the water but light is what highlights their value. The square is completely open to the daylight, creating a full of life space. The bath is lighted by the light that slides along the blocks, and its dark space is gifted with a great sensation of intimacy.
