POP CULTURE CENTER | BATTERSEA POWER STATION
London, UK
The intervention on the Battersea Power Station is based on an analysis of POP Culture, where individuality and everydayness are combined, creating a global image of society. Users are identified with the individuality, and their movement and activity along the project acquire and essential importance.
The massive building opens to the outside, and ground floor breaks free, linking the central courtyard with both turbine halls. This space flows horizontally and changes its use according to the event planned: from urban extension as a walkway and piazza to open air concert hall, exhibition and popular lead initiatives such as street markets.
The old turbine hall emptiness is colonized vertically by programmatic boxes which contains specific functions such as workshops or auditorium. An organic ramp system appears joint to the existing structure, and means either the access to those boxes and a fluent space where cultural activities take place. A new translucent polycarbonate skin and cover supported by a modern multidimensional metal structure completes the intervention, capturing the daylight and creating an ethereal atmosphere over the central space. The trace of the ramps is revealed to the outside through the skin.
There is a deep respect for the original building, the Power Station, with its meaning and rawness. The intervention, either volumetric and materially, try to blend in the preexistences – but always keeping their own meaning –. The essence of the factory, its structure and its brick façade are preserved, and the project coexists with the building in an authentic symbiosis.
