STUDENT INCUBATOR & COWORKING SPACE

Bratislava, Slovak Republic

Mlynská Dolina University Campus is gradually developing site in Bratislava. Commissioned by Ministry of Education, the place is synonymous of pleasant natural environment which support teaching, research, science and accommodation options for students in Bratislava. The University Incubator is thought to provide students and new companies a space for working and generating ideas.

The one-storey building is semi buried in a soft slope. The roof works as a platform providing a square for all the complex. An access ramp down following the slope divides the building into different functional parts and connects the upper level with an open air wooden terrace. A secondary block located in the south is used as a parking and is linked with the rest by a continuous façade of wooden slats.

Indoor space consists of two arms around access ramp. Southern one is formed by cellular offices ensuring privacy and northern arm is a fluent open space where study areas are mixed with social places. Several cylindrical courtyards with glazed walls are laid out allowing maximum daylight penetration without problems of glare and solar gain.

Project is based on the principle of sustainability. Underground inner space and garden roof minimize heat losses and create comfortable conditions. The building generates and harvests its own energy by means of solar panels above the parking block and wind turbines distributed all over the complex, with different heights, creating the feeling of an industrial forest.
